VEGAS BETTING ODDS: WISCONSIN (-2) vs. OHIO STATE ~ TOTAL: (123 1/2)
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES: (15-7) – (5-6 BIG 10) ~ WISCONSIN BADGERS: (13-10) – (6-6 BIG 10)
FIRST MEETING JAN. 3, 2020: WISKY Won 61-57 at Ohio State
One of the deepest leagues in CBB this year is the Big 10 and it’s a really tough league to win on the Road. Somehow Wisky beat the Buckeyes at their place at a time the Buckeyes were ranked #3 in the nation. Both teams are simply playing for their Big Dance lives right now and this is a definite “MUST WIN” for Ohio State as they can’t afford to lose twice to the Badgers. Wisky is also in need of another bigger “RESUME WIN” too and sweeping a team once ranked #1 could be enough to sneak them in without a late season collapse.
Wisconsin is a really good team in Madison and once again this season they are dominating on their Home court. They are (10-1) at the Kohl Center and the only loss was by 1 to a really good Illinois team. They have suffered some off court troubles as one of their best players, Kobe King, decided to quit the team and transfer. Since the team has looked completely out of sorts. They lost 3 of their past 4 games and they are just frigid ice cold from 3-Land of late, shooting a horrific (23-82) (28%) over their past 3 games. They for some reason refuse to work the ball inside. Their top deep gunner D. Trice can’t hit broad side of a barn right now as he’s 4-16 from deep. They come into this big game off blowout loss to an average Minnesota team 70-52. They shot (19-66) in the loss in a game many expected a possible little run after beating Michigan State at Home the game prior. But they went out and simply looked off from opening tip. They have really missed stud B. Davison the past few games.
Ohio State was ranked #1 in the nation to start 2020 and they quickly then shit the bed. They lost 4 straight games, and 6 of 7 and went from looking loaded to cupboard bare. Now though they seemed to regroup with 3 straight wins. The good news is two of those 3 wins came away from Home. They were (1-4) on Road before winning those two Roadies, which should give them some nice confidence heading into this game in Madison. They also though lost a key starter, as DJ Carton (3rd leading scorer) left the team to focus on his mental health. Both teams losing a key player is just a sad shame.
Both these teams are more gifted on the Defensive end of the floor, with both in Top 20 of Defensive Efficiency this season in the entire country. Wisconsin plays at one of the slowest paces and averages a very low possessions and that’s in the entire country. In that first meeting the two teams shot (6-23) and (6-20) from deep and when you struggle to get ball inside, you end up with a low scoring affair.
But we must look at this glaring stat. Wisconsin averages 74 points per game at Home this year. They average 10 made 3’s per game at Home this year. They shoot 40% from 3-land at Home. Ohio State is dead last in the Big 10 guarding 3’s (37.5%). It will be really interesting in “what gives” as the Buckeyes have only allowed 3 teams all season to score 70 or more points on them. They have held their last 3 opponents to score under 60 points. They allow only 38% FG %.
The Buckeyes need their best game from their big stat K. Wesson here as this has more chance to get higher scoring as the Badgers are just a totally different and more comfortable team at the Kohl Center. Wesson is avg. 15.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, 48% FG, he’s hitting a superb 42% on 3-balls and he has six double-doubles in Big 10 play. The Badgers counter with no superstar but Nate Reuvers is their “glue guy” and he has 7 straight games with double digit scoring.
2000 WISCONSIN FINAL 4 TEAM REUNION TODAY AND THROWBACK UNIFORMS TOO
At Halftime the 2000 Wisconsin Final 4 team will be recognized and that should really boost the Home Crowd going into the Second Half.
WISCONSIN IS AN “OVER” TICKET CASHER PAST 10 AT KOHL CENTER
The Badgers come in going “OVER” the posted Total (7-2-1) the past 10 games.
SUNDAY SCHOOLERS AND GETTING SCHOOLED
Wisky comes in with a solid (4-0) ATS it’s last 4 games played on Sunday. Ohio State the opposite as they are a woeful (1-6) ATS their past 7 Sunday games.
Many call Wisky HC Greg Gard a super Head Coach. I don’t. He allows his team to waste too much time on the clock each possession and half time they end up taking a rushed 3 pointer. Ohio State is one of those really head scratching teams as they shoot 41% of their shots from 3-land. Why? Why? This is the main reason both are in a spot where today’s WIN is paramount. The Badgers grabbing a win really helps them be in good footing as they already have wins over Penn State, Tennessee, Maryland and Ohio State once. A sweep of the Buckeyes will really pad their resume. But it’s hard to side with this team that has looked really bad the past 4 games and with off court troubles not once, but twice the past few weeks and you have a team clearly not fully focused. But the linesmakers gave you no “value” getting a lousy bucket only for this contest. It’s two contrasting styles as far as high scoring at Home for the Badgers and lower scoring for the Buckeyes. It’s clear the team that shoots the ball better from 3-Land wins this game. It’s likely to go right down to the wire and back and forth the entire game.
Enjoy this 1pm/EST start on Sunday as two middling Big 10 teams give us a good old fashioned barn burner.
May all your wagers be “WINNING” ones.
