ESB “GAME OF NIGHT”: FLA. ST. @ VIRGINIA (1-28)
ELITE SHADOW BETS STAFF “GAME OF THE NIGHT” FULL PREVIEW (TUES. JAN. 28): FLA STATE @ VIRGINIA
CBB DEFENDING CHAMPS IN “MUST WIN” SPOT vs. STREAKING SEMINOLES!
VEGAS BETTING ODDS: #5 FLORIDA STATE (-1 1/2) @ VIRGINIA ~ TOTAL: (114)
FLORIDA STATE: (17-2) – ACC: (7-1) ~ VIRGINIA: (13-6) – ACC: (5-4)
The College Basketball Defending Champs, Virginia Cavs, finds themselves in a very difficult spot tonight as they host a red hot Florida State Seminoles team, winners of 10 straight games. The Seminoles have not lost a game in nearly 2 months, and Virginia has lost 4 of it’s last 6, with the two wins over ACC bottom feeders and by only 5 points and 2 points (in Overtime). This Cavs team is night and day different from last years loaded Title team. With only 4 remaining games left on the Cavs schedule vs. likely Big Dance participants, this is the biggest game by far or their season.
Virginia simply is one of the worst shooting teams in the nation. Sometimes it’s gotten overlooked because of the great Defense they always play and so many just expect the scores to always be low. But this team is shooting only 40% overall. They are dreadful from the deep 3 range hitting only 26%. And it’s not likely all of a sudden some great scoring will start to happen ahead. It will be fully up to it’s really good Defense to keep them in games and pray they can score just enough to win enough games to get an invite into the Dance.
Florida State is #5 in the nation and (17-2) yet it’s still flying under the radar. They are different on Offense than Virginia as they average 76 points per game. They have proved they can play fast pace or slow pace and still come away with the “W”. In fact in it’s lowest scoring Offensive effort this year, 54, that was enough to win the game. And who did they beat in that game? It was tonight’s opponent Virginia. The game was dominated by the Seminoles as they forced the Cavs into 18 turnovers (29% of it’s possessions) and 10 steals and 5 blocks.
VIRGINIA STILL PLAYING DOMINATE DEFENSE
Virginia isn’t a great team this season due to their shooting woes, but they do have the #2 Adjusted Defense Efficiency in the nation. They have held 10 opponents under 54 points or less. They have actually allowed only 2 opponents all season to score over 65 points. They as expected lost both games.
KEY MATCHUP TO WATCH
The Point Guard matchups is always a key one to watch and tonight it’s key to such a big size difference. The Seminoles PG Trent Forrest is 6’4″/210 and the Cavs counter with a very small 5’9″/160 PG in Kihei Clark. In the first game a few weeks ago, Clark committed 9 turnovers (half of the teams 18) and a lot of that was due to such a big size difference.
VIRGINIA AT HOME (AND OVERALL) NOT CASHING TICKETS
Virginia at Home is now (1-5) ATS at Home their last 6 games and just (4-13) ATS overall it’s last 17 games. Look folks CBB is designed to help even the smaller teams compete and when you see the Cavs shooting only 26% from 3-land you can see this team is very flawed and not shocking the Defending Champs are simply a bad bet right now and maybe rest of the season.
ANOTHER DEFENSIVE SNOOZE FEST TONIGHT?
It’s not often you get to see two of the top 23 Adjusted Defensive Efficiency teams but this game will feature two of the best Defensive Units in all of CBB. Both play close games often as the Cavs last 6 decided by 8 points or less (the 8 also was in Overtime) and Florida State has close game wins (1, 4 (OT), and 4) in it’s last 3. It’s strange to look back and see the Cavs were a turnover machine and shot terrible from 3 (3-15 with only T. Woldentensae hitting a 3 that night) and still stood to sneak out a win but a Seminoles 10-3 run to end the game led to the Noles winning by 4 points.
LOW TOTAL A BIT TOO LOW?
Yes the first meeting tallied only 114 total points but that is the only game all season Florida State finished with a Total of 114 points scored or less in one of their games. And the Noles actually were abysmal in the paint going just (12-32). These two were still able to hit 114 points (the same Total for tonight’s game) with both turnovers galore and bad shooting nights by both.
Right now the Seminoles are streaking with 10 straight wins and a win over the Cavs less than 2 weeks ago. They aren’t blowing teams out, but in crunch time they have been money. Virginia as I said earlier is in a tough spot now to garner enough big wins the rest of the way with only 4 games remaining against probable Big Dance teams. A win over the #5 team in the nation when it’s coming in with a 10 game win streak would very much help a “on the bubble” resume. I would expect both teams to shoot the ball better in this revenge game and I’d doubt Cavs PG Clark turns it over 9 times again. The key factor for the Cavs to grab this win is shoot better from 3-land to open up the inside a little better for it’s superstar Forward M. Diakite. The guy who could be the “X-factor” for the Cavs tonight is Woldentensae, as he has started to get hot shooting 3’s (over 42%). Look the Cavs have won many a game ugly and low scoring. But against this Seminoles team they likely will need to score 65 or more to win. The Seminoles are playing very loose right now and they know they can beat these Cavs (won 2 of last 3 meetings) and I think we see a more uptempo game with more scoring than we saw the first meeting just 2 weeks ago.
