FLORIDA STATE: (20-3) – (10-2 ACC/2nd Place Tie ~  DUKE: (20-3) – (10-2 ACC/2nd Place Tie)

Well tonight’s “Game of the Night Full Preview” was the easiest choice in weeks for us to make as two of the best CBB teams collide tonight in Durham, NC. Duke will host Florida State in a battle of second place teams (both 10-2 in ACC play) vying for a very high seed in the Big Dance. This will be a game Florida State kids have waited for since last year when they lost two heart breakers to Duke. The Duke kids come in off the best comeback in ages as they took their main rival Tar Heels to Overtime and won it on a last second tip in. Duke has now won 5 straight games heading into this big game tonight.

Both these teams have some really elite talent so no surprise they are the #7 and #8 teams in the nation. These two are so much alike. Fla State D forces a turnover on 25% of it’s opponents possessions and Duke D does it 22% of the time. Fla State is a blocking machine….with 5 guys really studs blocking shots. Fla St just out rebounded Miami by 46-24 margin Saturday. They won’t though come close to that vs. Duke tonight.

The Seminoles are led by a three headed monster at Guard, with all 3 scoring in Double Digits. They are led by a beast in 6-8 Center R. Gray, who averages 19.3 points per game. This team blocks 17% of it’s opponents shots as they simply play tenacious Defense for a team that still likes to play fast. The Seminoles have 11 players who play double digit minutes so they stay fresh the entire game. Gray will face his toughest test of the season vs. Duke Center Vernon Carey, Jr.

Duke is once again a young team, and although PG Tre Jones is just a Sophmore, he plays like a Senior. He was unbelievable in the comeback win over NC on Saturday. He has to really be better with the ball tonight though and avoid turnovers. He does cause turnover and the Sems turn it over 13x a game. Carey is simply unstoppable in the paint and from any range shooting 2 point shots as he’s at near 60% (59.3 to be exact). He is also one of the best Offensive Rebounders in all of CBB.

Duke is a high scoring team and at Home they have scored no less than 73 points. That actually ended in one of their 2 Home losses this season. They are usually closer to the 90 point mark as they play fast and go to the hoop more than any other team in the nation. Florida State won’t shy from the fast pace as they play super fast tempo too. On the Road in their wins they scored 74, 83, 78, 78 so they can compete point for point here tonight.

Florida State has beaten ACC first place Louisville while Duke lost to the Cards. Florida State is just 2-21 in it’s last 23 trips to wild Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke has won 8 of the past 9 meetings as well.

Duke is 6-2 ATS it’s last 8 games vs. team solid teams with a win % of over .600 and so they are well prepped for game’s like tonight.

FINAL SHOT

This isn’t a “MUST WIN” game like many of the teams we’ve written about the past few weeks and really it’s more for better seeding down the road in Big Dance brackets time. I am a long time Duke fan but I have to wonder how they get up for this game as they normally would’ve have had they not made that improbable comeback over NC just TWO DAYS ago. The Home fans will be rowdy and that could give them a needed boost and the only good news after a hard fought battle that went OT is that the best player on Duke, Vernon Carey, Jr fouled out relatively early and won’t be tired as the rest of the kids. The Seminoles are really good and they match up well with Duke. They play high scoring games at times but they play really solid Defense and can cause Duke into some scoreless droughts in this game. I expect both teams to play fast, but not as fast as they do at certain times as they aren’t playing a weak opponent. The Seminoles are a deep team and that’s why they are in most games til the end. I expect this game to be hard fought the entire way, back and forth with the lead and in the end it will come down to a key FT made or missed as it ends with a super close score.

Enjoy the game tonight and have a great new week ahead. May all your wagers be WINNING ones.
