ESB “GAME OF NIGHT”: W.VA. @ TEXAS TECH PREVIEW (1-29)

ELITE SHADOW BETS STAFF “GAME OF NIGHT” PREVIEW: WEST VA. @ TEXAS TECH (WED. JAN. 29TH, 2020)

MOUNTAINEERS TRY TO GRAB SEASON SWEEP IN LUBBOCK vs. TEXAS TECH!

VEGAS BETTING ODDS: TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS (-2 1/2) vs. WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS ~  TOTAL: (132)

WEST VIRGINIA (16-3) – (4-2 in Big 12)   ***  TEXAS TECH (12-7) – (3-3 in Big 12)

For the past few days we have highlighted some high level CBB games that are not just one of the games between elite top teams, but also a game where one of the two teams is in dire need of a gigantic type win as well. We once again get that tonight, and it’s interesting that last night we had one of last years Title game teams and tonight we get the other Title game team in search of that gigantic win. Texas Tech right now is in need of bolstering a current resume that is not likely to earn a Invite to the Big Dance.

These two teams met January 11th and West Virginia won 66-54. Since that game the Mountaineers have been red hot winning 5 of their last 6 games and the Red Raiders have really been sputtering losing 4 of their last 6, including 2 of their last 3 Home games. How shocking is it for the Red Raiders to lose Home games? Lets look at their Saturday loss to Kentucky, their first loss since 2013 (54 straight wins prior) in Non Conference Play on their 3rd best Home court in all of College Basketball.

Last night we told you about two really loaded Defensive teams, and we saw a grind it out and hard to score game (albeit the game going “OVER” the Total exactly as we had predicted). Well folks tonight we get a almost never seen Defensive battle, as West Va. is #1 and Texas Tech is #5 in the Defensive Efficiency department. These two teams really know each other extremely well. Last year the played three times and TT won 2 of the 3. They won (81-50) at Home and (62-59) and the Mountaineers won the third meeting in the Big 12 Tourney (79-74). Neither team is in the Top 200 shooting 3-balls. So that means the Defenses can lag off the deep balls and pack the paint and that simply makes scoring much more difficult.

FIRST GAME STATS WERE VERY ONE SIDED

It’s interesting to see that in the first game, the team with a (74-48) shot advantage lost. You won’t see that happen very often. What was the big difference was the disparity as WVa. shot 35 FT’s and TT only 7. That also is something you almost never see such a wide, wide margin. WVa simply did their damage with limited shots as they shot (17-33) in FG tries. It was a game also marred by turnovers by both teams as WVa turned it over 21x and TT turned it over 16. This is mostly due to two teams who really play tough Defense the second the ball comes in bounds after a basket is made.

WEST VIRGINIA 3 LOSSES ALL ON ROAD

For the Mountaineers this has been a very solid season and they have a 2 point and 7 point loss in 2 of their 3 Road Losses.

MOUNTAINEERS DEFENSE IS THEIR CALLING CARD

WVa Defense this year has been beyond outstanding. In their last 11 games they have really amped it up a notch allowing only 51, 59, 49, 54, 41, 59, 64, 57, 53 in 9 of those games. I will admit something I’ve said for months now, this is the worst shooting season I’ve seen in 20 years across the board. But you also have to give credit to a team allowing those really low point numbers. WVa. is allowing only (40.8%) vs. it’s opponents so this will be a very difficult spot tonight for TTech Offense to have one of it’s better shooting night, especially from 3-Land. They are now allowing only (34%) FG% in their last 6 games.

MORE TURNOVERS THAN A BAKERY

Tonight you will likely see two teams who will likely turn over their opposition as TT is #10 and WVa. is #38 in forcing turnovers.

WEST VIRGINIA LEADING SCORER IS BARELY AT DOUBLE DIGITS

When we talk about “TEAM” the very first team I’d call this would be West Virginia. Their leading scorer, O. Tschiebwe is averaging only (11.8) points per game. You will possibly never again see a team enter a 20th game of their season having 16 wins with their leading scorer at only (11.8) points per game.

WEST VIRGINIA VERY SOLID “DOG” AND “UNDER” PLAY OF LATE

The Mountaineers are (5-1) ATS their last 6 as an Underdog, and 6 of their last 7 games overall have gone “UNDER” the posted Total.

FINAL SHOT

Much like last night, we have a team in as desperate need of a “BIG WIN” as a team could be in as TTech must add to a currently weak resume. Beating a 16-3 WVa. team would be a very nice check mark for them to the Committee. They shot poorly from 3-land on Saturday in OT loss to Kentucky as they were just (3-19).  They do average 32% on the season so they likely will revert back closer to that number tonight. Both these teams are a lot alike and when you see WVa allowing 60 points per game and TT allowing just 62 points per game, you know Defense will be tonight’s calling card for both clubs. In the first meeting we saw TT really get their shots off much easier than WVa Offense could. It’s nearly impossible to see a team shoot 35 FT’s when they only took 48 total shots so hard to imagine this game is that lopsided with game in Lubbock. Texas Tech has a game at Kansas on deck on Saturday and that will be a very tough one to grab a win. So that makes this game tonight possibly the biggest game this season and one they have to win. We all know Duke and Kansas and Kentucky have these gigantic Home Court advantages. But not many would even grasp the 3rd best Home Court advantage takes place in Lubbock for the Red Raiders side. I expect this Home court big edge will catapult the Red Raiders to even the score for the season series and get them a really, really big win they need for their Resume come seasons end. A loss here could possibly end their chances to even make it back to the Big Dance. The Red Raiders will come out with their best effort all season and come away with this much needed win and keep them in the Big Dance picture.
