Well the Football Gods didn’t do the fans watching this Monday Night Football game any favors as two garbage trucks collide at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly. The Giants and Eagles come in losing a combined 11 games, with the Giants on a putrid 8 game losing streak. The Eagles are just (5-6), but they are still battling for first place Tie in the NFC East if they can win tonight. These two teams lifetime are 83-83-2 so they have been as even as possible over all these years. The Eagles have won 5 straight meetings vs. the Giants. Tonight Giants long time QB Eli Manning will get the start due to the injury by Rookie D. Jones, and it’s for the best for both Jones, who badly needed a break as he was a sinking Titanic the past 8 weeks. Manning hasn’t beaten the Eagles since 2016 season and hasn’t beat the Eagles at Lincoln Field since 2013.
Manning’s last 2 starts vs. the Eagles have been horrible, passing for just one TD and no 300 yard passing game and sacked 6 times total in the two games combined. Manning is 116-116 overall as a Starter and this likely will be his final game vs. the rival Eagles. He surely will be fired up to start after sitting out the past 10 weeks. Manning is just 10-20 lifetime vs. the Eagles.
The Giants Offense has been missing key parts for really the entire season. Tonight TE Engram is out and it seems half the receiving corps is always a game time call. The Giants came into the season what looked like the best RB in the NFL, S. Barkley, and also a great pass catching threat out of backfield too. But with a young QB Jones struggling to read coverages, opposing Defenses have loaded the box to slow Barkley. He has had no TD’s since week 7 and he has zero 100 yard rushing games since Week 2. The Giants must get good stats from Barkley tonight or they have no chance to pull the Upset. Last season Barkley destroyed the Eagles Defense, rushing for 231 yards and 2 rushing TD’s and catching 16 passes for 140 total yards and one receiving TD in the two losses to the Birds. WR S. Shepard has played fantastic vs. the Eagles, catching at least 7 passes and scoring a TD in 2 of the past 3 meetings vs. Philly.
On paper and coming into this 2019 season it was thought that this was the Eagles best and most talented roster in years, even better than the SB winning roster. But injuries and erratic QB play and a Defense that simply hasn’t made enough big plays to make this a solid overall unit. All teams start with their QB spot, and the Eagles QB Carson Wentz is just not consistent. He does have a TD pass in 15 straight games, but he does not even have one back to back 3 TD passing games all season. At times he scrambles away from near Sacks like Russell Wilson, and other times he simply looks lost and his passes often are way off the mark. He has had some Offensive Line injuries, but all teams have. He simply is not more than an average starting QB, and one of the main reasons the Eagles again are a losing team is he hasn’t carried the team on his back like Wilson does. Last week Wentz had one of his best passing games, 310 passing yards but that was vs. the terrible Dolphins Defense. He was sacked 2x and missed a handful of open receivers.
The Eagles all season have come out the gate as off as really any team in the NFL, getting a TD on their opening drive just twice the past 7 weeks and almost always playing from behind. They don’t just start slow, they close in horrific fashion as well. They average just (3.2) points in the 4th quarter the past 7 weeks, failing to make any comebacks from behind. Losing to the lowly tanking Dolphins last week as double digit favorites shows you what the Eagles really are. They are Exactly what their record shows, a losing bunch of under achieving players, and that is from top to bottom. One ray of hope for the Birds of late is RB Miles Sanders. He has 879 yards from scrimmage as he’s a solid pass catcher and nice runner as well. Last week he rushed ball 17x for 83 yards. He is a total mismatch vs. a weak Giants LB Corps tonight. Last night I told you to watch the Rams TE Higbee to have a big night vs. the Seahawks LB’s and he had a huge night (7 catches – 116 total yards). I think it’s Sanders who may have a big night tonight running and catching the ball.
I watch a ton of tape and try to find where teams are very good or very weak. It’s rare to see a team that has success passing for big yards and not being a winning team. But like the TB Bucs, passing for big numbers does NOT equate to WINS. Let’s look at Eagles HC D.Pederson, who shockingly is (9-12) as the Eagles head coach when the team passes for 275 yards or more. But Pederson is an off charts outstanding (21-2) when the team rushes for 120 yards or more. Let’s see this game tonight has the Giants Run Defense simply not that good and of late looking very tired. The Giants secondary is even worse, so what does Pederson do tonight, run it more or let Wentz fling it all over the yard. I say he runs it more as it’s statement time for the Eagles to show they are still a tough Offensive Unit and they need to go pound it at the Giants Defense for 4 quarters. I no longer trust Wentz as a QB passing it 35x a game or more as he simply makes too many bad decisions and tonight they are playing a “MUST WIN” game vs. a really crappy team. If they avoid mistakes, get Sanders the ball not just rushing it, but on screen passes he can break big plays and get the ball out fast to TE Z. Ertz for 6-7 yard gains. Stay out of third and long and they should be able to move the chains relatively easily.
The Giants on the Road this season (1-5) straight up and (3-3) ATS. They have allowed 31 points or more in 5 of those 6 roadies. They have scored a season low of 14 points this year on the Road. One l
The Eagles at Home this year are just (3-3) straight up, and (2-4) ATS. The Eagles have scored 30 points or more 5x, they have scored 20 points or more 4 and they have scored 1o points or less 3x (all losses). They surely are not scoring 10 points or less vs. this terrible Giants Defense.
“KEY” WEATHER UPDATE:
It will not be kind to the players as it looks like 90% chance of rain at kickoff time with a steady rain throughout. Bad weather is always a help to the bad teams as they can get lucky with a slick, wet ball being fumbled or a QB making an errant throw with the wet ball. I told you earlier the Eagles win at maddening % when they rush for 120 yards or more. With a steady rain, I expect Eagles HC Pederson to opt for more runs and less passes by Wentz. I also think with Manning not playing for 10 long weeks, at first at least, the Giants game plan will be to try to get stud RB Barkley going rushing the ball and hoping he can get into a nice gear of solid long runs and putting less pressure on Manning with an already leaky Offensive Line. This is a game Manning would love to throw it 40+ times, and had the weather cooperated, he might’ve gotten that wish. But I can’t see how either throws it a ton unless one falls way behind. Not at all sure how you can lay basically double digits with an Eagles team that has just two wins all season by double digits. So you want to bet the Giants tonight ahhh? Well folks they have lost by double digits in half of their games (losses by 14, 18, 18, 18, 19, and 21 points). I’ve said for years you bet on the worst teams and you are surely broke and maybe homeless. This is one terrible game to bet on either side, as for the Eagles they would be thrilled to walk off field winning by 1 point. As for the Giants, a 4 loss end to season gets them 2nd pick at worst in Draft and shot at Buckeyes beast DE C. Young. Also how can you bet on a super rusty QB in Eli Manning, who has sat on bench for really the entire season. This game is a bettors nightmare waiting to happen, with the water cooler talk tomorrow how the losing side of this 9 1/2 point spread just losing somehow in the final minute, with either a Eagles FG to go up 10, or Manning making one last scoring drive to get back under the (-9 1/2) point spread to break the Eagles bettors hearts (and wallets).
Enjoy the game tonight, and if you bet it I hope you can end up with a Winning ticket.
