Well the Pac-12 lost out on what could’ve been a really big game tonight if Oregon didn’t get Upset a few weeks ago vs. Arizona State. Now this game only has huge implications for the Utah side, as they need to win and hope for some good results on Saturday to get one of the 4 coveted CFB PLAYOFF spots.
It’s not too often we get to see 2 teams with loaded Offenses and loaded Defenses. Utah stubbed their toe only once, to USC in their Pac-12 Opener. It was a kinda crazy game as for the most part they dominated USC, but a Trojans backup QB came in and just threw balls up for grabs, but he magically found his receivers enough to pull the Upset win. Coming into the season many felt Utah would win the Pac-12 and have one of the Best Defenses in CFB. The Utes Defense is simply LOADED BIGTIME as you can NOT run the ball against them. They allow only 56 rushing yards per game as they are just beasts on the D-Line and they are one of the best tackling teams in the nation. Since the USC loss, they have won 8 straight games by avg. of 29 points per game. They had only one game where it got a little crazy with some big plays vs. Washington and they allowed 28 points. This Utes Defense has held half their opponents to a TD or less. Only twice have they allowed over 17 points all season.
Tonight Utah’s off charts Rush Defense will face it’s toughest test as the Oregon Ducks run the ball very well, averaging 179 rush yards per game. They also possess one of the best QB’s in the nation in QB Herbert. They faced another QB in almost same mold as Herbert vs. Washington University, QB Eason, and allowed him 28 points.
Utah will also face a tough test when rushing the ball as Oregon’s Run Defense allows just 106 rushing per game. But Utah’s stud RB Moss is like not many other RB’s in the nation and he should still get his yards tonight. Utah QB Huntley had a fantastic season, with 16 TD passes and only 2 interceptions. He is averaging 11 yards per pass. He is a dual threat and will be trouble tonight for the Ducks Defense when he passes ball and when he runs. He is never tackled easily. He and RB Moss are one of the best QB/RB tandems in the nation. Utah Offense will be tested though as Oregon has numerous studs on Defense including one guy I feel is one of the elites in the nation and will be Utes biggest pest all night, LB Troy Dye. This kid is always around the ball and makes big plays and crushing tackles every week. Oregon likes to load the box and so I expect Utah to possibly start right off with some deep balls. Look folks they scored a very week 3 points in this same Pac-12 Title game last year. They played without Huntley and Moss, so that wasn’t overly shocking as Washington had a great Defense last year. But you gotta fire up the troops and an early big pass bomb looks to be in order tonight for the Utes Offense. Huntley got really hot the past few games hitting 82% so the Utes hope that carries over into this game tonight.
Oregon QB Herbert will likely be a great Pro. He had a fine season hitting 68% of his passes and 13 TD;s and 5 TD’s but nowhere near what I expected or really many top scouts. He may be forced to use that golden arm tonight more then hoped, as the Utes massive 330 pound beast DT’s L. Fotu and J. Penisini are just nearly impossible to get thru the middle rushing the ball. Herbert also will always be on look out for Utah’s top DE B. Anae, as he is another beast rushing the passer and just destroying Offensive Lineman. Good news for Herbert is he has a young phenom in Tackle P. Sewell blocking for him and nobody gets thru this stud.
The one big problem with knowing how good is Utah really? On paper and stats they look like a top 4 team. But they played the 92 easiest schedule in all of CFB. Oregon is nowhere in the class of their schedule so far. It’s also crazy as Utah failed to beat USC, yet Oregon completely bombed them 56-24. But then we see Utah totally stuffed Arizona State 21-3, and yet Oregon lost to them as 2 TD favorites.
This is the ninth season since Utah entered the Pac-12 Conference and Utah and HC K. Whittingham are in search of that first ever coveted Pac-12 Title. He’s definitely got all the pieces in place to hoist his first Title Trophy, but he likely will need his Offense to score 28 points or more. I surely expect we will see one hard hitting and fun game tonight with turnovers the key word of the game. Both teams will make the other one pay dearly on any turnover. With Oregon having nothing to lose, they come in stress free knowing a win knocks the Utes out of the Playoff 4. They will take chances all game and it will be those chances I feel that decide this game, one way or the other.
