THREE BIG “RANKED vs. RANKED: CFB ELITES THIS SATURDAY (10-11-19)
SATURDAY CFB LOADED WITH 3 OFF CHARTS MATCHUPS OF TOP RANKED TEAMS!
This is clearly a Saturday you don’t want to miss as we have 3 fantastic match ups of ranked teams and all could decide a spot in the Final 4 Playoff at seasons end. What’s even better their kickoff times are all spaced perfectly, with one noon (est), one at 330 (est) and then the last of the three at 730 (est). This is going to be one day to skip the errands and just watch College Football all day long.
Four of the six playing in these 3 games are ranked in the Top 10: LSU (5), OKLAHOMA (6), FLORIDA (7), PENN STATE (10). The two not ranked Top 10 are: TEXAS (11) and IOWA (17).
The Penn State at Iowa games pits two of the top Defenses in the country with Penn State’s Defense (#4) and Iowa’s Defense (#5). Their are 16 Unbeaten teams left in the country, with four of these 6 still yet to be beaten in this 2019 campaign. Those four are Oklahoma, Penn State, LSU and Florida. That unbeaten number must drop by at least one with LSU (#17 D) battling Florida on Saturday.
The Florida at LSU match up is intriguing as Florida has the (#10) Defense in the nation, yet they are just a crumb shy of getting 2 TD’s (+13 1/2) from the Vegas Sports Books. Texas is also a double digit Underdog to Oklahoma as Vegas has that point spread at Oklahoma (-10 1/2). Oklahoma comes in with the top ranked Offense in the nation and should be very excited to face Texas #104 ranked Defense. Texas has been filled with injuries all season, especially in the secondary. No way they slow down Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts and Company from scoring a ton of points, but they have a top 20 ranked Offense themselves with one of the most tough and savvy QB’s in the Nation in Sam Ehlinger. So if weather permits (bad storms hitting Midwest here these next few days), this first game of the Saturday card could be the most exciting one of them all.
The clear top Defensive battle on Saturday of these 3 marquee games is Penn State (#4 D) traveling to Iowa to face the (#5 D). These 2 Defenses are just stifling and Penn State now allowing opposing teams to rush for only (51) yards per game. Iowa not too shabby (86). But the crazy part is with 5 games already played out, Iowa’s Defense has allowed opponents into their Red Zone only 6 times all year. They have only allowed 3 TD’s all year. These numbers are truly in record breaking territory if they ever kept up this pace. Penn State Defense close behind only allowing Opponents into their Red Zone 9x, allowing a very sparse 4 TD’s thus far. We saw Iowa and Michigan grind it out for four quarters with the end score 10-3. Michigan’s D is right there with these two teams Defenses and with possibly severely bad weather, this one could be very low scoring.
For a few of these QB’s playing on these 6 teams mentioned above, this is the week they can really help their Heisman Trophy chances. It’s one thing to throw up big yards vs. average teams, but you do it vs. elite teams and the voters take much greater credence of what you do against the best of the best. Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts leads the #1 Offense in the nation averaging (644) total yards per game. This number is insane as it’s 73 yards more (PER GAME) than #2 LSU Offense that is averaging a crazy 571 Total yards per game, led by my Heisman Leader (so far) QB Joe Burrows. He is passing it for 416 yards per game and is one of only 2 QB’s who are averaging over 400 yards passing per game. For the first time in ages LSU is now a passing team and not one just trying to grind out wins with a solid Defense. Burrows will face it’s toughest test yet vs. this Gators Defense that has only allowed 3 TD’s inside it’s Red Zone this year, in 14 trips there. If Burrows can light this Gators Defense up on Saturday, he could bolt to the top of the Leader board for the Heisman. Florida won last years meeting at the Swamp as a small 1 1/2 point dog, 27-19.
The clear possibly higher scoring game of these Big 3 is the Red River Shootout. Last year Texas beat the Oklahoma Mayfields 48-45. Oklahoma was a 6 1/2 point favorite over Texas, but they committed 3 costly turnovers, and due to that, Texas ran 75 plays to the Sooners 58. Texas was able to keep the High Flyin’ Sooners Offense off the field just enough to squeak out a victory. No player on the field Saturday will have more heart and toughness to will his team to a win than does Texas QB Sam Ehlinger, who simply never stops amazing me with keeping his team (one that is really not close to elite level) in games and his HC (Herman) is one of the best all time when coming into a game as the Underdog. He is an incredible ticket cashing machine when installed as the Dog going (13-2-1 ATS) overall when taking points in the pointspread. He is (8-2 ATS) in that spot as Texas HC, including last year in this Red River Rivalry game. He was (5-0-1 ATS) at Houston as the Head Coach. He clearly knows how to get his kids fully prepared when facing a tough situation. If he beats this Oklahoma team though again with this really bad (injury riddled) Defense, they need to change his name to Houdini and build a statue in Austin starting Sunday morning.
Oh and one last note as we don’t even need to wait til Saturday to see two of the Best Defenses in the nation facing off. On Friday night, we see Virginia and it’s #13 Defense facing off vs. Miami’s #15 Defense. Virginia has really been a team flying under the radar the past few years, but they are now upper echelon and they had Notre Dame on the ropes, but they committed too many costly turnovers to pull the Upset and shock the world to really seeing how good this team is. Miami is a team you should never look to bet. Just way to erratic and now they have a first year HC too. We lean to Virginia here, but as slightly as possible and they won’t make my Gameday Picks cut. Miami will be looking to avenge a crushing 16-13 loss to the Cavs last year, this while holding Virginia to just 235 Total yards on Offense. Last year both teams turned it over 3x, which is still the problem for both these teams. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that team that wins turnover battle here likely wins.
O.K. folks enjoy the games this weekend and may all your wagers be Winning ones.
